South Dominates Population Growth Estimates

Austin, Raleigh, Orlando Record Highest Percentage Increases

Southern metros are gaining the most population. That’s the message sent by the U.S. Census Bureau in its recently-released 2016 population estimates.

Eight of the metropolitan areas among the top 10 population areas were located in the former Confederacy, with Austin, Raleigh and Orlando comprising the top three. Las Vegas (No. 5) and Phoenix (No. 9) were the only non-Southern metros near the top.

The entire top 10 has population growth of at least 2.0% in 2016, compared to the national rate of 0.7% growth. The fastest-growing metro areas also are recording some of the highest percentage increases of apartment supply, according to apartment market data from Axiometrics, a RealPage company.
